Who are they?
The British Hedgehog Preservation Society, also known as BHPS, was founded in 1982 to protect native hedgehogs.
Not only does this fantastic charity campaign to safeguard the future of hedgehogs, but they also provide advice and support for those who encounter injured hedgehogs around the UK.
You might recognise some of BHPS’ well-known patrons, including Dr Amir Khan, Dame Twiggy Lawson MBE, and David Lindo!
What do they do?
Through education, conservation, and cutting-edge research, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society works tirelessly to protect our precious hedgehogs – as they desperately need our help.
BHPS’ mission statement aims to highlight the actions they’re taking to fulfil their vision of a sustainable, thriving hedgehog population in the UK, including:
- Providing advocacy and expert advice to the public, businesses, government, and other organisations to improve the welfare of native hedgehogs and their habitats.
- Encouraging respect for hedgehogs and other wildlife by giving information and supporting educational activities.
- Funding research to build a better understanding of hedgehog populations.
- Offering advice and support to the public concerning the welfare of hedgehogs; particularly those who are injured, ill, mistreated, orphaned, or facing other challenges.
If it wasn’t for public support our Charity wouldn’t run. We rely upon kind subscriptions, legacies, and donations like this to be able to continue with our work to protect the welfare and future of hedgehogs native to the UK. We are so grateful for [Animal Friends’] generous support.
How we’ve helped The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS)
We’ve helped The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) through a total of £20,000 in donations so far!
World Animal Day
As part of our World Animal Day celebrations, where we donated to one charity from each continent, we donated £10,000 to The British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
A £10,000 donation means BHPS can:
- …Fund the BHPS contribution to Hedgehog Friendly Campus Project for four months.
- Hedgehog Friendly Campus & Schools gives awards to universities, FE colleges, secondary and primary schools who complete actions from our hedgehog-friendly toolkit. From litter picks and hedgehog surveys, to campaigning and blogging, there’s something for every campus.
OR
- … Fund the BHPS contribution to London Hogwatch for two months.
London Hogwatch identifies hedgehog populations in Greater London to promote conservation strategies for their protection, connection and expansion.
OR
- … Fully fund a new research project on kidney disease in hedgehogs, ensuring we can better understand the species and the threats it faces.
OR
- …Send 665 education packs.
- £15 pays for a hedgehog welfare education pack - helping school children across the UK learn about how they can make a difference to hedgehogs and other local wildlife.
‘Tails’ of UK Wildlife
Our ‘Tails’ of UK Wildlife campaign focuses on preserving habitats and giving a voice to UK wildlife. We believe that no matter the size of our outdoor space, there’s always a way for us to help wildlife and nature. So, from balcony pots to vast garden plots, let’s nurture the nature around us!
In our efforts to care for wildlife, we’ve partnered with The British Hedgehog Preservation Society to support the vital work they do on behalf of this special, spiny species. We’re donating £10,000 to BHPS, so they can continue their mission to create a brighter future for our humble hedgehog.
Even the tiniest step can make a big impact on our journey towards a wildlife-friendly future. So, check out the list below to explore the ways you’re able to help hedgehogs through The British Hedgehog Preservation Society…
