2024 Charity Review

A look back at a year of giving and how we all helped make a difference

Get ready to dive into a year of giving, reflecting on our support to animal welfare and conservation. Thanks to pet parents choosing us as their insurer, we were able to have a significant impact on animal welfare and conservation around the world.

Together, we’ve made a meaningful difference.

In 2024, we proudly donated £794,528 to 256 incredible animal welfare and conservation charities across the globe. These are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and protecting a wide range of species, from endangered wildlife to pets in need of shelter and care.

A look at how we helped those in need

Standing strong with War Paws

War Paws, a charity dedicated to providing care and support for animals affected by conflict, recently received a significant £10,000 donation in 2024. The charity faced significant challenges and struggled to access essential funds and resources, causing some concerns about their ability to meet the urgent needs of animals in their care.

After a really tough start to 2024 where we faced multiple costly setbacks that were out of our control that made providing for the animals under our care all the more difficult, Animal Friends Insurance showed their support for the vital work we do in caring for the street dogs of Iraq. The emergency grant AFI awarded us provided us with the means to continue providing food, shelter and medical care to the hundreds of animals at our shelter during a really difficult time for us as well as being able to keep our doors open to help more injured, neglected, abandoned animals. All of us at War Paws cannot thank AFI enough for their belief in and support of our work. - Victoria Whitehouse, Trustee

A helping paw for pets in Ukraine…

In light of the ongoing war in Ukraine, we urgently responded by donating £2,500 to Romanian League in Defence of Animals (ROLDA). This helped support animal feeding stations in Ukraine by providing essential food supplies to those impacted by the ongoing conflict.

This year has been one of immense challenges and achievements. In Ukraine, we’ve worked tirelessly with local partners to deliver food, medicine, and essential supplies to approx 40 shelters overwhelmed by abandoned and injured animals. The resilience of the animals and the people protecting them continues to humble us—and it’s all possible because of compassionate supporters like you.

Your generosity has helped us to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome hundreds of animals while also offering vital aid to communities facing unimaginable hardships. On behalf of everyone at ROLDA, thank you for being such an essential part of our mission this year. - Dana Costin, Founder.

Helping some familiar names

Animal Friends Insurance has been a proud supporter of Birmingham Dogs Home since 2020. In 2024, we were delighted to contribute £22,500 towards the creation of a new enrichment and socialisation area. This exciting project will provide dogs in their care with more opportunities to play, exercise, and interact, increasing their chances of finding loving homes.

Some of our colleagues also visited Birmingham Dogs Home, using their Paid Volunteering Day to assist with kennel cleaning, dog walking, and feeding. These experiences show just how important our giving is to our colleagues, staying true to our values and helping in any way we can.

Animal Friends Pet Insurance are proud supporters of Birmingham Dogs Home, contributing not just financially but also through their time and dedication. In 2024, they generously donated a significant sum towards our paddocks project, providing a crucial boost towards helping us continue to secure the funding needed to bring this project to completion. - Sophie Evans, Corporate Partnerships Officer

A lifeline for stranded marine mammals

We were also proud to support The Cetacean Research & Rescue Unit (CRRU) with a £2,000 donation. This funding helped provide essential veterinary supplies, consumables, and rescue equipment, allowing CRRU to continue rescuing and rehabilitating stranded whales and dolphins in Scotland.

To everyone at Animal Friends Insurance, we are extremely grateful for your ongoing support for our life-saving efforts with whales and dolphins in Scotland. - Dr Kevin Robinson, Executive Director

Supporting wildlife rehabilitation efforts

We also provided a £1,200 donation to The Falconry Centre who had reached out for funding to care for an injured Short-Eared Owl. With the RSPB estimating that there only around 600 to 2,000 pairs in the UK, we knew we wanted to help in any way we could.

Sadly, Shortie did not survive. She had four fractures to two wing bones and a puncture wound to her eye, and one of the fractures was at least two weeks old. The charity told us: She simply did not have the strength to pull through despite our best efforts and the expert veterinary care she received from Evolutionary Exotics. We are all devastated by this outcome but consoled by the fact that in her last days she was warm, well-fed and pain-free. It was obviously not the result we were hoping for, but Shortie got the best possible chance thanks to the funding from Animal Friends!”

Around 85% of the wild birds the Centre take in each year are successfully returned to the wild, but Shortie just didn’t have the reserves she needed to recover.

We understand that even with the best care, not all animals can be successfully rehabilitated. However, we believe in the importance of supporting charities like The Falconry Centre that work tirelessly to protect and care for wildlife. We are proud to have supported the team in their efforts to save Shortie.

How we all give back

As part of our commitment to giving back, we give our colleagues lots of opportunity to support some of their favourite charities. Each quarter, every individual has the opportunity to recognise a colleague who has gone above and beyond.

Making a difference to the lives of greyhounds

In 2024, Lauren Odendaal, our Campaign Marketing and Planning Manager, was selected as Colleague of the Quarter by her peers. In recognition of her award, Lauren chose Greyhound Lifeline to receive a £3,000 donation on her behalf.

I wanted to give back to Greyhound Lifeline because of the incredible work they do to support and rehome greyhounds. Over the past two years, Animal Friends has proudly sponsored an event called Pawfest, and each time I’ve had the privilege of meeting their amazing team of volunteers on site, learning more about their mission, and spending time with some of the wonderful dogs awaiting their forever homes.

I truly believe Greyhound Lifeline is deserving of my donation and when the time is right for me to adopt a dog, Greyhound Lifeline will undoubtedly be my top choice.

This contribution will directly support Greyhound Lifeline's vital work and help pay towards their new sensory area which will be built in spring.

Supporting charities close to home

Another colleague, Natalie Brundish, Senior Data Project Manager, also chose to donate their £3,000 Colleague of the Quarter award to a worthy cause. Natalie selected Homeless Hounds, a Lancashire-based charity dedicated to finding loving homes for stray dogs in need.

Natalie shared, "I chose Homeless Hounds as it's a local charity to me that goes above and beyond to find loving homes for stray dogs. The charity is run entirely by volunteers, so all the support we can provide to keep this charity running would be greatly received by them.

Nicola, a volunteer at Homeless Hounds, said:

On behalf of Homeless Hounds, I would like to thank your colleague for nominating us and Animal Friends for the extremely generous donation. This has helped pay for the vaccinations of the 6 Malinois pups, who were abandoned recently. The remainder was paid towards Daisy's operation to remove an unsightly mammary gland, which was causing her discomfort.  Thank you for thinking of the homeless dogs, we are truly grateful.

Looking ahead into 2025…

We are incredibly proud of the positive impact we've made on animal welfare and conservation in 2024. Thanks to the support of our pet parents and the dedication of our colleagues, we've been able to make a real difference to the lives of countless animals.

As we move forward, we remain committed to our mission of changing the lives of animals and protecting the environment. We believe that every animal deserves a happy and healthy life, and we will continue to support charities that are working tirelessly to make this a reality.

Thank you for choosing Animal Friends Insurance.

Together, we can build a brighter future for animals everywhere.
