We are celebrating scruffy pets here at Animal Friends. Here are just a few breeds who have some fantastic coats, from wiry to soft, thin or thick!
Cairn Terrier
The Cairn Terrier originates from the Scottish Highlands and makes a great family pet and companion. These scruffy chappies need to be special groomed with hands and not with scissors or shearers. Hand stripping removes from the root which keeps their skin and coats healthy!
Irish Wolfhound
The Irish Wolfhound is an ancient breed which stands as one of the tallest dogs in the world. Their wiry coat can be grey, brindle, red, black, white, or fawn. The gentle giants do require grooming at least once a week.
Cockapoo
The cockapoo is a very popular breed, a perfect mix between Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. Some cockapoos won’t shed a hair but they do require a good trim from time to time. These dogs come in various sizes and coats but all just as cute!
Komondor
The Komondor, also known as the Hungarian Sheepdog, is recognised by its corded coat. A Komondor isn’t born with the corded coat as its puppy coat is soft and fluffy. As the puppy grows the coat curls as the soft undercoat and coarse outer-coat combine. The coat doesn’t need brushing but it’s important to keep its hair clean and dry to avoid discolouration.
Lhasa Apso
The Lhasa Apso is one of the world’s oldest recognised breeds. Their distinctive long coat often grows to the ground and sheds like human hair!
Newfoundland
The Newfoundland, originating from Canada, has heavy, water-resistant coat. Their coat requires a lot of grooming and, as you can imagine, it’s a magnet for dirt and debris. Their big and slobbery cuddles make up for any mess, though!
Border Terrier
The Border Terrier is amongst the most popular breeds in the UK. Their coat is made out of two different types. The outer-coat is wiry while their undercoat is soft but dense, this makes them super weather resistant. Like the Cairn Terrier, they also require an occasional hand strip to remove their dead hair.
