Arthritis in dogs – how online pet pharmacies can help

Advert: August 2024

These case studies have been reviewed and approved by our Head of Veterinary Services, Jen Wormleighton, MRCVS.

As our dogs get older, they may face a range of different ailments, including arthritis. A common condition that effects their joints, causing discomfort, pain, and reduced mobility in our canine companions.

Unfortunately, as you’ll know if your dog has arthritis, there’s no cure for it – but, luckily, there are ways to manage the symptoms.

Along with advice on weight management, exercise adjustments, and possible modifications to their environment, vets are likely to prescribe anti-inflammatories to help support your dog.

But, the ongoing costs of treatment can add up quickly when your dog needs daily medication to stay happy and healthy. Thankfully, there may be another way to safely and more cost effectively get their treatment – an online pet pharmacy!

What is an online pet pharmacy?

An online pet pharmacy lets you order your dog’s prescription, supplements, or other healthcare products straight to your door. Not only are they convenient and accessible, but they can also help you save money, too, as they can sometimes charge a lower price than your vet practice.

Can online pet pharmacies help save money on arthritis prescriptions for my dog?

Yes, they most likely can! For example, if you had a 30kg dog and needed to buy a Metacam 180ml Oral Suspension bottle (a type of painkiller and anti-inflammatory for dogs) that would last you around 13 weeks, you could be saving £64.22 if you purchased it through an online pet pharmacy.

Savings like these can add up, giving you more money in your back pocket or, if you have it, in your insurance pot to use for other conditions or costs when needed. So, using an online pet pharmacy for your dog’s prescription can help save you time, money, and stress.

Is it safe to buy my dog’s arthritis prescription online?

Yes – getting your dog’s prescription medication from an online pharmacy is just as safe as getting them from your vet, provided you use an accredited supplier

Spotting the signs of arthritis in dogs

Being able to recognise arthritis early is important for your dog’s comfort and well-being. The signs can be subtle and easily mistaken for normal aging. Instead of obvious limping, you might notice changes in your dog’s behaviour.

Reduced activity

A dog who once loved to run and play may begin to slow down, spending more time resting and showing less enthusiasm for walks or fetching a ball.

Difficulty moving

They may show hesitation when going up or down stairs, stiffness when getting up (especially after a long rest), or a reluctance to jump into the car.

Changes in their gait

Changes in how your dog moves can be a sign of arthritis. They might start to limp, or their walk may appear uneven or altered. Shuffling feet or dragging paws are other potential indicators of joint pain.

Changes in grooming habits

When grooming, your dog might struggle to reach certain areas, leading to a matted or unkempt coat, particularly on their back or legs.

Irritability

If your dog is in pain, they may become more irritable, causing them to snap or growl when touched near sore joints.

Swollen joints

You may notice swelling around one or more of your dog's joints.

Licking or chewing at joints

Dogs in pain may lick or chew at the affected joint in an attempt to soothe the discomfort.

Caring for your arthritic dog at home

If you suspect your dog has arthritis, you’ll need to visit the vet for diagnosis and possible treatment plans. However, there are several things you can do at home to help make your dog more comfortable.

Provide a comfortable bed

For a dog with arthritis, a comfortable, supportive bed is important. Choose a warm, draft-free spot, and consider an orthopaedic bed for extra support and comfort while they rest.

Maintain a healthy weight

Any excess weight puts extra stress on already aching joints. If needed, your vet can provide a diet plan to help your dog maintain a healthy weight.

Gentle exercise

It might seem surprising, but gentle exercise can actually help keep your dog's joints mobile. Short, frequent walks are often more beneficial than a longer walk.

Swimming is also an excellent low-impact option when it comes to exercising your dog, but very cold water or water with an uneven entry and exit, such as pebbly beaches, can lead to sprains in already inflamed joints.

Accessible essentials

Make sure your dog’s food and water bowls are easily accessible for them. Also consider using ramps or steps to help your dog reach elevated surfaces like the sofa or bed if needed.

Grooming assistance

If your dog struggles to groom themselves, you can give them a helping hand by gently brushing them regularly to prevent matting. Pay particular attention to areas they can no longer easily reach.

Medication and supplements

Your vet may prescribe pain medication or recommend joint supplements to help manage your dog's arthritis.

Changes to their environment

Creating a safe and comfortable environment can really help your dog. You can do this by adding non-slip mats to slippery floors, providing extra padding in their favourite spots, or adjusting the temperature of your home. You might also want to consider raising their food and water bowls to reduce strain on their neck and joints.
