5 signs your pet has seen a ghost

As it's Curious Events Day and with the run-up to Halloween, do you know the tell-tale signs that your pet might have seen a ghost?

8th October 2018

Has your canine companion ever barked at something you can’t see? Or have you noticed your feline friend suddenly stop playing to stare at nothing?

Whether or not you believe in ghosts, we can agree our pets have an incredible sixth sense. However, does their sixth sense give our pets the power to detect the paranormal?

Can dogs and cats see ghosts?

Although there isn't any scientific evidence to support supernatural sightings, many believe there are signs our pets have seen a ghost or spirit:

1. Following something invisible

Watching your pet follow something invisible, as they sit still with their eyes darting around the room, could make them seem paranoid. Likewise, it can be spooky to see our furry friends get up to pursue nothing with their eager noses.

Is there a chance they’ve sensed spirits, or are they just being silly?

2. Barking or hissing at nothing

It can be haunting if you’re home alone when your pet suddenly barks or hisses at nothing!

Have they heard a sound you haven’t, or is there something paranormal present?

3. Looking for comfort or trying to protect you

Has your cat ever randomly clambered onto you for a cuddle? Or does your dog pounce into protective mode for no apparent reason? If so, some argue these behaviours are because they’ve sensed a ghostly visitor.

4. Acting distracted

Although it isn’t unusual for our pampered pets to pretend not to hear us, when we want their attention for anything other than feeding time, it can be creepy when they seem distracted by someone or something that isn’t there!

Perhaps there’s a paranormal presence attracting our pets’ attention?

5. Interacting with an invisible friend

Sometimes, believing in spirits can be a comfort. Losing a loved one is hard, whether they’re human or animal, and it’s a lovely thought that their spirits can be sensed by our pets. So, if you’ve ever noticed your dog rolling over or excitedly wagging their tail as if interacting with someone who isn’t there, or you’ve seen your cat purring happily at no-one like they’re enjoying attention from a familiar friend, there’s no harm in hoping your pet is playing with the spirit of someone who’s passed on.

Pets play a huge part in our lives, they’re our chosen family, so, it’s not surprising we find them fascinating and wonder what the world is like for them. While we won’t be able to know for certain whether our pets have encountered something supernatural or if they’ve experienced echoes from ‘the other side’, every pet has their own, special story.

While our pets may have the senses to see things we cannot, sometimes they don’t have the understanding or judgement to avoid potentially negative situations - occasionally resulting in unfortunate outcomes. Pet insurance can help you to cover the cost of veterinary treatment if they get injured or fall ill, helping you to provide security for your best friend when they need it most.
